His history :
"Appeared in antiquity. The opening medallion was used as a piece of jewelry in which a lock of hair or other symbolic element from the loved one was placed. At the end of the 16th century, these elements were replaced by portraits. Mainly. worn by women, the medallion generally contained a portrait of their child or their husband. Once closed, the precious object served as a lucky charm, as a jewel, but also as a safe and secret place to conserve human energy. It was also a jewel that was passed from woman to woman."
