In his monumental encyclopedia Natural History published around the year 77, Pliny the Elder called opal a wonderful gem because it contained in it the qualities and colors of all other precious stones.
Legend has it that Marc Antony dreamed of acquiring the blue opal from Senator Nonius in order to give it to the beautiful Cleopatra. The opal was so valuable that Nonius preferred exile rather than having to part with his stone.
